After a weekend of networking with Fair Trade-focused companies like Ben & Jerry’s, Green Mountain Coffee, and Ten Thousand Villages at the Fair Trade Towns & Universities National Conference (conveniently held in Philadelphia for it’s first annual event), SRB welcomed three fantastic speakers to talk about fair trade as a growing business model, and the impacts it has on long-term sustainability and global development. The included two representatives from FairTrade USA (David Funkhouser & Billy Goldsmith), the largest third-party certifier of Fair Trade products in the U.S., as well as a small-scale coffee farmer and fair trade cooperative president (Angelino Espinoza Mata) from Veracruz, Mexico- whose major buyers include Ben & Jerry’s and Green Mountain Coffee.
What a great opportunity it was to hear how Fair Trade changes lives straight from the source of a fair-trade community. Angelino shared how Fair Trade helped send his children to college, helped to build community health clinics (specifically focused on women & cancer) and helped to provide basic health packages to members of his cooperative.
All that power to make change behind a morning cup o’ joe? You bet.
So be the source of change, and choose Fair Trade!
